Modified Stage-Gate: A Product Development Process

Abstract

In today’s dynamic marketplace, manufacturing companies are under
strong pressure to introduce new products for long-term survival with
their competitors. Increased competition and reduced product life cycles
put force upon companies to develop new products faster. In response to
these pressing needs, there should be some new approach compatible in
flexible circumstances. This presentation presents a solution based on
the popular Stage-Gate system, which is closely linked with virtual team
approach. Virtual teams can provide a platform to advance the
knowledge-base in a company and thus to reduce time-to-market. The
presentation describes all the major aspects of new product development
(NPD), NPD process and its relationship with virtual teams, Stage-Gate
system finally presents a modified Stage-Gate system to cope up with the
changing needs.

Facilitating social collaboration in mobile cloud-based learning: A teamworkas a service (TaaS) approach  (Article)

Abstract

Mobile learning is an emerging trend
that brings many advantages to distributed learners, enabling them to
achieve collaborative learning, in which the virtual teams are usually
built to engage multiple learners working together towards the same
pedagogical goals in online courses. However, the socio-technical
mechanisms to enhance teamwork performance are lacking. To meet this
gap, we adopt the social computing to affiliate learners' behaviors and
offer them computational choices to build a better collaborative
learning context. Combining the features of the cloud environment, we
have identified a learning flow based on Kolb team learning experience
to realize this approach. Such novel learning flow can be executed by
our newly designed system, Teamwork as a Service (TaaS), in conjunction
with the cloud-hosting learning management systems. Following this
learning flow, learners benefit from the functions provided by
cloud-based services when cooperating in a mobile environment, being
organized into cloud-based teaching strategies namely 'Jigsaw
Classroom', planning and publishing tasks, as well as rationalizing task
allocation and mutual supervision. In particular, we model the social
features related to the collaborative learning activities, and introduce
a genetic algorithm approach to grouping learners into appropriate
teams with two different team formation scenarios. Experimental results
prove our approach is able to facilitate teamwork, while learners'
capabilities and preferences are taken into consideration. In addition,
empirical evaluations have been conducted to show the improvement of
collaborative learning brought by TaaS in real university level courses.

immediately with the market requirements due to knowledge dynamics
being experienced in the competitive milieu. Increased competition and
reduced product life cycles put force upon companies to develop new
products faster. In response to these pressing needs, there should be
some new approach compatible in flexible circumstances. This paper
presents a solution based on the popular Stage-Gate system, which is
closely linked with virtual team approach. Virtual teams can provide a
platform to advance the knowledge-base in a company and thus to reduce
time-to-market. This article introduces conceptual product development
architecture under a virtual team umbrella. The paper describes all the
major aspects of new product development (NPD), NPD process and its
relationship with virtual teams, Stage-Gate system finally presents a
modified Stage-Gate system to cope up with the changing needs. It also
provides the guidelines for the successful implementation of virtual
teams in new product development.

Equality of Google Scholar with Web of Science Citations: Case of Malaysian Engineering Highly Cited Papers - Nader Ale Ebrahim

Google Scholar (GS) and ISI Web of Science, in order to test the

Abstract

Publishing
a high quality paper in scientific journals is a halfway of receiving
citation in the future. The rest of the way is advertising and
disseminating the publications by using the proper “Research Tools”.
Familiarity with the tools allows the researcher to increase his/her
h-index in the short time. H-index shows the academicians influences in
the specified field of research. Therefore, a person with higher level
of h-index has more high quality publications with high amount of
citations. This presentation, covers the following topics: Why publish

Abstract

The
aim of this paper is to extend the knowledge about virtual teams and
above all to stress the differences between face-to-face and virtual
teams as well as to define its chosen success factors. This paper is
based on an extended literature review of virtual teams. The author
describes virtual teams, reasons for their implementation and four
factors that are prerequisites for team success.

The first finding
is that the successful introduction of a virtual team and its
management requires knowledge about the special characteristics of this
team and the effective handling of challenges. Second, the literature
review of virtual teams reveals a lack of research on the differences in
motivation between face-to-face and virtual teams. The originality of
the article is ensured by selection of the most important factors which,
according to the literature review, lead to the success of virtual
teams and by a description of areas that need to be explored in the
future.

management requires knowledge about the special characteristics of this
team and the effective handling of challenges. Second, the literature
review of virtual teams reveals a lack of research on the differences in
motivation between face-to-face and virtual teams. The originality of
the article is ensured by selection of the most important factors which,
according to the literature review, lead to the success of virtual
teams and by a description of areas that need to be explored in the
future.

Abstract

In today’s dynamic marketplace,
manufacturing companies are under strong pressure to introduce new
products for long-term survival with their competitors. Nevertheless,
every company cannot cope up progressively or immediately with the
market requirements due to knowledge dynamics being experienced in the
competitive milieu. Increased competition and reduced product life
cycles put force upon companies to develop new products faster. In
response to these pressing needs, there should be some new approach
compatible in flexible circumstances. This paper presents a solution
based on the popular Stage-Gate system, which is closely linked with
virtual team approach. Virtual teams can provide a platform to advance
the knowledge-base in a company and thus to reduce time-to-market. This
article introduces conceptual product development architecture under a
virtual team umbrella. The paper describes all the major aspects of new
product development (NPD), NPD process and its relationship with virtual
teams, Stage-Gate system finally presents a modified Stage-Gate system
to cope up with the changing needs. It also provides the guidelines for
the successful implementation of virtual teams in new product
development.

Abstract

The
prevalence of Virtual Team (VT) configurations in organizations has
come to challenge the relevance of traditional management practices
based on traditional, physically collocated teams. Creativity—a topical
and multidisciplinary issue—has been under-researched within the context
of virtuality. Predicated on the premise that creativity may be
expressed differently in the context of VTs, I draw the conceptual
foundations for this research from the fields of virtuality (i.e. VTs)
and creativity, and use engineering design as the empirical context,
with the aim of pursuing a better understanding of creativity in
relationship with virtuality in the context of Virtual Design Teams
(VDTs). Design constitutes a pertinent empirical context because (a)
designers have to deliver outputs requiring creativity; and (b) their
work is increasingly accomplished in VDT environments. I report on the
findings from three case studies involving temporary VDTs. Studies 1 and
2 comprised student engineers. Study 3 was a comparative case study
focusing on a team of professional engineers, who completed one design
task while physically collocated (face-to-face, F2F) and another one
while geographically dispersed (virtually), with the aim of isolating
factors that are unique to virtuality. With an interpretive stance
guiding this research, the same analytical approach for each case study,
and with the team serving as the unit of analysis, I analysed the
collected data (interview data, observations, video recordings,
photographic material, documents, communication extracts, design and
other outputs) qualitatively with the use of visual and thematic
analysis. The thesis makes the following theoretical contributions: (a)
it advances understanding of creativity within the VDT lifecycle; (b) it
elicits factors influencing creativity in the temporary VDT context;
and (c) it explains how the unique characteristics of virtuality
influence creativity within this context. The thesis’ limitations as
well as implications for research and practice are also discussed.

Abstract

Commercialization
in university has increasingly been considered as a complementary and
attractive solution to new technology innovation and product marketing.
However, the rate of commercialization amongst academic researchers and
inventors has been discouraging. The aim of this study was to identify
the problems and issues on the process of innovation and
commercialization and then improve the commercialization rate in
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). To achieve these goals seven
factors were examined to identify how they affect on the university’s
innovation and commercialization. These factors were market driven
innovation, financial support, marketing and selling strategy, improve
technology, time to market and time constrain, the relationship between
university and industry as well as the university policy and system with
the special focus on the the relationship between university and
industry and its effect on the commercialization rate in UTM. This study
was based on a qualitative research method and was designed to use a
case study approach. A total of sixteen face-to-face interviews were
conducted. Respondents were chosen from inventors, academic researchers
and Innovation and Commercialization Centre staff in UTM. The researcher
utilized the content-analysis approach to analyze the data obtained
from the semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that, the
most critical factor was relationship between university and industry
and role of financial support. This study also addressed the
implications and recommendation for research and practitioners.
Suggestions were provided to enhance the role of academic researchers
and inventors toward commercialization.
